another nice start to the day on this thursday morning, september 16th, 2010. we've had a great week so far. it looks like it will continue today. although perhaps a little bit warmer. thanks for being with us. i'm steve chenevey. >> and i'm allison seymour. that pesky little humidity is creeping back into the forecast. tony perkins is joining us with the details. not just the nasty humidity. >> i keep saying that. today is a transition day. we've had great weather for the week. today is not so great. it will be humid, warmer, more clouds and it will set us up for a wonderful weekend. high clouds streaming through early this morning. you'll see some sun filter through but the clouds will thicken up and by tonight mostly cloudy skies. right now 69 in the capital.

62 at dulles. dover, delaware, 67 degrees. today clouds on the increase. warm temperatures. more humid than it has been. breezy with winds out of the south at 10-15 miles per hour. that's a look at the weather. now an update on traffic and for that we go to julie wright. not so bad right now if you're at the wilson bridge. the inner loop of the beltway slowing leaving braddock toward 66. and the lanes are open. eastbound 66 tied up as you work in from the virginia visitor's center and nutley street to the beltway. delays on braddock eastbound toward the beltway, also on 50 delays from fairfax circle to the beltway. a crash on 15 and that's tieing up the right side of the road. no problems in montgomery county. slow from the 410 out of riverdale into the northeast. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. our top story this morning,

a deadly crash in district heights overnight involving an suv and ambulance. two people were killed. two medics are being treated. stacy cohan has the details. >> reporter: this happened around midnight, this collision between an ambulance and the suv. they do have the suburban involved in the crash up on a flatbed tow truck and they remove it and reopen this roadway. to learn more about what happened, all of the fire investigators had to do was take a look at the dashboard camera in the ambulance and they were able to watch the accident happen. >> in the distance on the dash cam you can see a set of headlights approaching that appears to be in the same lane of travel but coming in the opposite direction, coming at a head-on collision direction. the ambulance slows down and the car approaching it is

coming at such a fast rate of speed, all the driver could do was take a quick swerve to the left. >> reporter: fortunately that ambulance driver did make that choice because the careening suburban managed to sideswipe the ambulance, taking off the entire side of the vehicle before traveling another 40 yards and slamming into a brick wall, utility pole and landing upside down. the pock ants were dead on the scene. two ambulance workers were transported to a local hospital and they are going to be just fine. while we were listening to mark brady talk during the moments. the suburban was towed away and they still have this stretch of the roadway closed down for the accident investigation but i would guess within the next hour, this stretch of marlboro pike will be reopened to traffic. i'm stacy cohan, fox 5 news. and emergency vehicles were involved in two accidents yesterday. this is one of them where a montgomery county police

officer was involved in a chain reaction crash. the police cruiser collided with another car as the officer was responding to a emergency call in rockville. both cars then hit other vehicles. there is the police vehicle. and it hit a postal truck. the driver of the postal truck it minor injuries. and another accident at 14th and madison street. the 12 passengers on the bus and its four firefighters involved were all taken to the hospital but nobody was hurt? an argument at a popular hangout led to a shooting in upper marlboro. a group of girls were fighting at an intersection near logo high school when a accept prat dispute broke out. several shots were fired and a 19-year-old was shot and he is expected to survive. the shooter is still on the loose. the voters have spoken and a big change is coming to the

d.c.'s mayor office. today, after months battling it out, adrian fenty seems at peace with the outcome while vince gray is humbled and thankful. sarah simmons is here with more. >> reporter: after months of come paining and negative adds the two appear to be playing nice and agreeing to work together on a smooth transition. vincent gray defeated fenty 64% to 45%. he is emphasizing voters that he will hold weekly press conferences and talked about ways he plans to bring unit to the district. >> we'll probably do a series of town hall meetings so we can hear from people. and not just democrats. we can hear from republicans and independents, because frankly i believe in my heart in one city. >> reporter: as for outgoing mayor fenty, he said he's not sure what the future holds. speaking to supporters at his campaign headquarters, he said he does not see elected office in his immediate future but

didn't rule it out. he said he will remain active in the community and looks forward to a vacation but also looking back at his campaign. >> we made a lot of tough political decisions, a lot of political decisions cost us popularity. there were other things probably factors in the race. plenty of time for analysis over the the next couple of days. you can go back to the things i said in addition to the tough decision making. and i said all of that publicly. >> reporter: vincent gray said there is more work to be done. and he set up a website and posted a blog cautioning voters not to take down the signs. but it appears he will sit in the mayor's office come january. another big question that comes from the win is what is

next for the d.c. public school chancellor. mayor fenty grave michelle rhee wide authority and she was criticized for firing educators. what does michelle rhee think of this? we'll hear from her in just a few minutes. the results from tuesday's voting took longer than expected. board of elections executive director rookie solomon said the counting fell behind schedule right after the polls closed and partly because workers had trouble shutting down brand new polling machines. this was also the first election with early voting and the first with same-day registration. now solomon joined us last night to defend the voting process. >> if you look at new york, they instituted new voting equipment as well and they did

not implement same-day registration, poll books as the district did. the district is the only one implementing all of those procedures at the same time and doing a good job. the political movement of the tea party fueled big victories on tuesday. can we expect similar results come november? we'll take a closer look ahead. and the big story, pope benedict xvi arrived in scotland. and as we head to break, we'll take a live look outside. the traffic on the beltway at new hampshire avenue. the latest forecast from tony and julie is going to check traffic coming up next. it's 7:08. n

back now with the big story from overseas where pope benedict the xvi is on a visit to edinburg, scotland. he was driven to queen elizabeth ii's castle. the visit growing controversy over the catholic church and the cost to the u.k. government as britain is shelling out nearly $20 million to host the pope and before you factor in security costs. hurricane season getting busy out there. tropical storm karl made landfall along the yucatan peninsula drumping rain -- dumping rain. it could hit the central coast next week. julia and igor are currently category three and category four storms respectively. igor is expected to hit bermuda over the weekend. tony is keeping a close eye on all of the storms but we're most worried about igor because

it is the closest to land. >> yes. and as a category four, 145 mile-per-hour winds, a hurricane can do considerable damage in bermuda. so it bears watching. hopefully it will move off to the east or take a turn to the north. but we'll have to wait and see how that happens. >> i hope it does. >> and i also want to mention that julia is now a category two hurricane. let's take a look at local temperatures at airports. we do have a lot of clouds. 62 at dulles and 63 at bwi sate the high clouds pushing through the region and we can see a good amount of cloud cover. there is still some sunshine filtering through. i think that will be the case through the morning. and then during the late afternoon more clouds will build in as we get set for maybe some rain later tonight.

66 eastbound close in here at the beltway. a wreck before the exit for the outer loop. that's the exit that would take you down toward 50 arlington boulevard and in the direction of the springfield interchange. the accident tieing up the left side of the road and that's pushing everybody over to the right as you continue inbound on 66. traffic will slow at business 234. again 7100 to fair oaks and leaving nutley street to the accident scene which is behind the overhead signs here on 66. inner loop congested up to braddock where all lanes are open. outer loop below speed leaving new hampshire through silver spring. look for delays on 95. inbound 50 congested out of riverdale and into northeast. new york avenue slows from the times building to the entrance of the third street tunnel. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. phase two of the dulles metro rail project might cost more than $3.5 billion and that's about $1.3 billion over

the original estimate. the metropolitan washington airport authority is considering alternative station locations that could save up to $640 million and would likely mean higher fares on the dulles toll road. phase one of the project is underway and scheduled to be finished in 2013. the candidates in the race for governor of maryland are facing off for the second time. alley has to convince voters that his leadership during economic turmoil was strong enough to get him a second term. bob ehrlich has to explain that he has the experience to do the job that marylanders are not satisfied with o'malley. >> during a serious time, people want serious people, conveying serious messages on serious issues about their life. that's why we're winning. >> it will be a choice for the people of our state about whether we move forward or whether we slip back. >> to take back the house bob

next 106 days. she and the democratic nominee will have to decide what their respective roles are for any days after january 2nd of in the year. >> reporter: many d.c. voters told pollsters, although they like the test scores, they don't like the top-down theory. will she stay? >> we're not going to make any decisions until after the election but i think it's important that we have discussions now. >> the vote on the mayor is some indication that there are issues with how she is doing things and i think there are some things to be taken into consideration. >> reporter: tommy wales is floating an intriguing idea. keep her for one more year, a transition year. >> michelle rhee has put a lot

of things in place that are just taking off and will be implemented next fall. i would love to see her stay for another school year. and what does the chancellor think? >> can you work under vincent gray and stay with d.c. schools? >> i'm going to take the next few days, i'm going on my little prehoneymoon trip and i'll reflect on everything and then when i come back i'm going to meet with the chair, talk to a lot of people and make decisions from there. >> reporter: we also ran councilman wells compromise. keep her on the job for one more year. the chancellor was not enthusiastic about that plan. john henrehan, fox 5 news. it is 7:19 right now and coming up next on fox 5 morning news, an arrest is made in the mugging near the university of maryland campus. how this surveillance tape may lead to more arrests. and misidentified grave sites at arlington cemetery.

police have arrested one man. they are searching for more suspects accused of terrorizing neighborhoods around the university of maryland. bernard shaw has been held without bond. police say on august 8th he and others approached victims. the remaining suspects have been spotted at surveillance at 7-eleven stores. they are considered armed and dangerous. new details from the army that three burial sites last month had the wrong remains.

this is an investigation after bookkeeping problems. an ohio family came to washington this week to make sure their son was buried in the right place. heath warner remains -- his remains were exhumed and correctly identified. >> in my public statement i said the desecration stops today and that's what i hope happens. and i know that's the hope, that the honor and dignity of arlington is restored. >> after positively identifying the body, the warners had their son reburied. earlier this summer a senate subcommittee reported as many as 6600 graves at arlington may be unmarked, improperly marked or mislabeled. buying a car can be a bit more confusing these days. the old assumptions of new versus used and buy versus lease has changed and there is

the holly father on a four-day visit to the u.k. here is a live look right now as the pope is in edinburg. 100,000 people are expected to line the streets this morning to greet the pontiff but it's being overshadowed by a child sex abuse scandal and there are also protested scheduled on gay marriage. and the cost of the visit is said to be some $20 million to pay for his visit to the united kingdom. >> we are familiar with how the city stops when the holy father comes. all the negative news aside he is in england today. it is 7:31 now. and going to be a sticky one today. >> a little muggy today. not overly pleasant, warmer and muggy and clouds hanging around. but that will set us up for a very nice weekend. want to start by focusing on the tropics. about them this morning. very active as we take a look at the tropical storms and hurricanes that we have out

there. there are three of them. let's take down the channel 5 bug down in the corner and you can see karl. it made landfall on the yucatan peninsula. maximum sustained winds 50 miles per hour and it's expected to reintensify back out over the water and will impact the central coast -- or the east coast of central mexico as well. igor, a major category four hurricane, maximum sustained winds 145 mile-per-hour. those dotted lines you see are the projected paths of igor. there are several of them. and some of them take it rather close to bermuda. so there are concerns about igor and continuing to watch it. off to the right side of the creep -- screen is julia, a

category two hurricane. right now maximum sustained wins are 105 miles per hour. current temperatures look like this: we are in the 60s. 68 degrees here in washington. 61 up in gaithersburg. 57 in frederick. there are still spots in the 50s out there. quantico 64 degrees. fredericksberg is at 63 degrees. the satellite radar composite for our area, i stepped outside and what is happening in the sky verified what we are seeing on the satellite radar. some high clouds streaming through. there is sun filtering through the clouds but still a cloudy start to the day. and i think as the day progresses we'll see clouds thicken up this afternoon into the evening hours. there is rainfall out to your west. that rain does not makes it way in here until tonight, the way we are thinking right now. clouds on the increase today. warmer temperatures and breezy. high of about 87 degrees. that's well above normal. normal high for today would be 79 degrees. then for tonight, more clouds, a chance for showers, mab a

again approaching the beltway. the accident activity was tieing up the two left lanes before you reach 495. southbound 270, lanes are open. no accidents to report but traffic remains slow from germantown toward montgomery village avenue and again at the lane divide. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. with the dust settled from tuesday's primary elections, one thing seems clear. the tea party has gained momentum after taking two major victories but it's still unclear what that means for the general election. as republicans debate the influence of the tea party and democrats look for ways to retain control of congress. >> ladies and gentlemen, the people of delaware have spoken. [ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: and now the republicans are speaking out about tea party candidate christine o'donnell who defeated mike castle of

delaware. john cone incorrects reports -- corrected reports. >> we are going to support her financially to the best of our ability. we'll be starting with some money early upfront. >> reporter: o'donnell's victory and that of carl pala dino in new york intense died the debate over the influence of the movement. some democrats say the momentum of the tea party may be good news for democrats. >> they're going -- there are going to be seats we will win in november that we were sure we would lose. >> reporter: robert gibbs went one step further. >> we'll see what that produces in november. i remain confident that on election night we'll retain control of the house and senate. >> to get more insight on the tea party and its impact. we're joined by nathan gonzales. thank you for being with us this morning. do you think, as we take a look at the big picture, is the tea party movement hurting the

republican party? >> i think tuesday's results made the delaware senate race more of a challenge. there is no question about that. but i think as -- on the whole, when we get to november, the tea party will be a net positive for republicans because this is where the energy is at in this election, among the tea party. and when we get to november, they're going to vote and they airport -- they ain't gonna be voting for the democrats. and i think that's what we'll see in november. >> so you think the candidates winning now can par lay that success into november. >> i think tea party candidates, one in kentucky and nevada, will help. delaware is a clear case where republicans were expected to win and now that's a challenge. but tea party candidates can win in november as a whole and it's going to be -- again i

think the energy is going to repel republicans close if not to over the majority. >> and the landscape is continuing changing and we've seen this surge of republicans to get out and make sure they vote because they see potential changes ahead. might this be, with more tea party candidates, might that now encourage more democrats getting out as opposed to thinking we may be defeated. now to urge more democrats to fight and make it closer in november. >> i think the prospect of republican takeover scares a whole lot of democrats. but i think in the end the democratic base will be there. now that is the mid term democratic base not the presidential democratic base. but they still have a problem with independent voters and they agree with republicans that the country is headed off on the wrong track and they are most likely to vote like republicans when we get to november. and that's a dramatic change from the last two election cycles when people said they were independent but they were

really voting like democrats. the tables had turned dramatically over the last 18 months. >> let's focus on the republican party and what you talked about before with the tea party movement. is there such a thing as a moderate republican these days. >> well there is, they're just not in congress right now. this shows that the tea party movement is serious and real and i think the tea party and conservatives will have a role not only in this election, but who is chosen for the 2012 g.o.p. nomination for president and that there be that tection there for sometime. but again when we talk about general elections i think republicans and conservatives, tea party folks will be unified in getting as many democrats out of office as possible. >> and christine o'donnell pulls the victory over a long- time competitor there who said if his campaign against here, listen, if she wins, we're out.

telling his fellow republicans, if she wins the primary, we'll lose in november. what does she have to do now? is there enough strength for her to carry this in november or might this change hands once again when we get to november? >> well i think she has to prove that she's a viable candidate. she has to prove she can raise money which the tea party has done a good job to raise 3 quarters of a million dollars. >> but will republicans support her financially. >> they're helping the minimum and that's what you heard john cornyn say. and they will invest in the very best opportunities possible and frankly a state that president obama won with over 60% is not at the top tier, not at the top of the list for republican opportunities. but it will come down to some tough choices because republicans have to win almost every senate u.s. competitive race to take the authority. >> and we chatted earlier and i think it said after 2008, republicans said we need a

that's where it was situated. and it was a kind of very small thing. maybe tables lined up, maybe about a dozen tables and the lady -- it was a purely a ladies thing, men didn't get involved in those days, the ladies of charity and they thought they would have a bizarre. which wasn't a greek thing at that time but the other churches did it. so we have a festival. so they asked for contributions from the ladies. and we were just growing up then and we would run over and get some of the lovely little things that we admired and buy them and bring them down and give them to the ladies and they would mark them up about 25% and sell them. >> reporter: you're sharing your profit margin, georgia. >> and then when we came back to purchase it was what we had bought in the first place. so we had to buy them back and then pay the prices.

it was okay. it was for the church so we didn't mind doing that. >> reporter: and it's still for the church, right? >> still for the church. >> reporter: that's wonderful. and it's the ladies that still pull it off. >> of course it is. and the men will tell you that. >> reporter: and they will. georgia, thank you so much for being here and sharing your memories with us. >> well it was hard getting here. >> reporter: tell me in a little bit. we'll talk about it. it's hard getting around here, right? we'll have a second cup of coffee. that will get us through. one of the great things we have here is the marketplace. now it's grown into a huge marketplace and shows things like wonderful greek jewelry. and that's where we have melanie with great designs. tell me what you have going on this year? >> this year we have beautiful pieces from greece. we just opened our line and, well we're starting to expand in this greek world.

southbound on 29, delays leaving tech road toward four conners. 395 across the 14th street bridge, all lanes are open, no incidents to report crossing over the potomac. that's a check of your fox 5 on- time traffic. an investigation underway after a crash in prince george's county overnight. the collision happened along marlboro pike in district heights, involving an suv and ambulance on its way to an emergency. three people in that suv were killed. two medics from the ambulance with being treated. stacy cohan has been following the story all morning. she's joins us live. stacy. >> reporter: we have good news for commuters. they have reopened the section of the roadway since last we spoke about an hour ago and of thattic is moving through here. now here is what happened. take a look at the video from early this morning. it was around midnight when an ambulance was leaving the station when a suburban apparently on the wrong side of the road and traveling very, very fast was heading straight

on toward the ambulance. the ambulance driver managed to swerve out of the way at the last moment. the suburban sheered off the entire side of the ambulance before it traveled another 40 yards, crashed into a brick wall, a utility pole and then flipped on to its roof. the people in the suv were pronounced dead. and the ambulance workers have been taken to the hospital and have been treated and released. ive spoke to the fire department's mark brady and he talks about the impact created by the suburban. >> i've never seen that amount of destruction done to an ambulance and i hate to think what would have happened if that would have hit head on. the speed of the vehicle and it's such a large vehicle to do that amount of damage on a sideswipe would have

obliterated a headon collision and we would have had serious conditions if our ambulance drivers hadn't been able to avoid the situation. >> reporter: this was derived from a camera on the dashboard on the ambulance. they were able to watch the accident as it happened from the perspective of the driver. marlboro pike has reopened but the investigation does continue along that line. fox 5 news. witnesses say a group of girls were fighting near largo high school when a separate dispute between two men broke out. neighbors tried to break it up. several shots were fired. a short time later a 19-year- old was hit. residents say the area is a gathering spot for young people after school and they have complained about this for years. >> we're used to it.

it's every day. it's not just today. it's every day. when they come across the street they gang it upm and there is one police officer that dispurses the crowd and they go from one place to another. >> the victim is expected to survive. police don't believe the men involved in the shooting went to largo high school. the search continues for more suspects terrorizing neighborhoods around the university of maryland for weeks. holding one person at gunpoint. police arrested schenn ora vaughn. police say he approached victims in college park and took their property and ran away. the suspects are considered armed and dangerous. a d.c. police officer on the wrong side of the law. one of 12 people indicted, part of a year-long investigation into the trafficking of heroin

and crack cocaine. he is on administrative leave and could face ten years to life in prison if convicted. with you now have 100% of the groups reporting. gray took 54% and fenty 45%. the two duked it up for months and now meanty has accepted the defeat. gray thanked voters at his rally and said he will be more inclusive than his predecessor. he outlined his plans to bring unit to the district. >> we'll probably do a series of town hall meetings so we can hear from people, and not just democrats, so we can hear from republicans and independents because frankly i believe in my heart in one city. >> and the outgoing mayor isn't sure what is in his future.

fenty said he does not see elected office in his immediate future but did not rule it out. he will remain active in his community and he's looking forward to a vacation. he's also reflecting on the campaign. >> we made a lot of tough political decisions and that cost us political popularity. there are other things that were factors in the case. plenty of time for andle is sis over the next couple of days. you can go back to the things i said and the recent engagement. i said all of that publicly. >> gray has a new website. on his blog he cautioned supporters not to give up until the general election. he is asking that they remain up. president's obama plan to raise taxes could hurt democrats who hope to use the tax hike as an election issue. doug luzader has more now from

capitol hill. >> reporter: the problem for the white house now is that the efforts to block the president's tax plan is bipartisan and growing. even at the congressional hispanic caucus gala last night, the president was on his campaign message, bemoaning republicans that are standing in the way of his tax point. >> and when it comes to just about everything we tried to do, almost every republican in congress has folded their arms and said no. >> reporter: but he can add democrats to this list. and they sent a letter saying they allow the the tax cuts to expire at the end of the year will jeopardize a recovery. it's putting more and more democrats in an awkward position. some of whom have been making the argument for months. >> there is a growing number of people keeping consumer spending up so raising anyone's

slow from 355 to connecticut avenue. no incident to report across the inbound 14th street bridge. all lanes are open. the stalled car has cleared. still going to find yourself on the brakes inbound new york to times building and from capitol street to the third street tunnel. it is a first since the vietnam war. a living service member set to receive the medal of honor. >> sarah simmons joins us with his story. >> reporter: army staff sergeant sal junta called himself a average soldier and describes the honor as overwhelming and bittersweet. the war documentary illustrated just how dangerous it was in afghanistan's more ingo valley. a lot of men became heroes but

one was chosen for the medal. 25-year-old staff sergeant sal junta, from cedar rapids, assigned to italy, told us what we remembered about october 25th, 2007 when he rescued two fellow soldiers while taking heavy enemy far. >> we walked into an l. shaped ambush. you could see the muzzle flashes from bullets leaving the enemy's guns that wasn't too far away. everyone was at risk. there is the code you just got hit and not hurt, and then there is the close where it snaps by your head but you're not hit. and then there is the whiz, tas further away than the crack. he saw sergeant josh brannan being hauled away by the taliban. >> he may not have gotten our son back. they saw him being carried into the woods and when he got to

josh, josh was severely wounded. he held his hand and talked to him and comforted him and tried to tell him everything would be okay. >> reporter: brenan later died but at least he didn't fall into enemy hands. at the time his major nominated him for the medal. >> i've never seen or heard of anything that heroic before. and he was shot twice in the abdomen for the base plate of his body arm or and shot again in the at 4 rocket launcher strapped to his back. they couldn't move and didn't have any kind of cover or concealment to leave anyone behind. >> reporter: he did not grow up wanting to be a soldier. >> i was working at subway at the time and mopping the floors at 10:00 at night and the radio

temperatures. so should be a perfect picture week here. allison, back to you. well understanding what your baby or toddler needs can be difficult at times because their communication is mostly limited to crying and stomping her feet sometimes. but there are ways to calm even the fussiest babies. and our expert is here to answer your questions and show you some techniques. this is dr. harvey carp and the man behind two books and also the dvds called the happiest baby on the block and the happiest toddler on the block. and it's hard to read sometimes so the dvds are good. >> they are very visual. so it's like learning how to tie your shoe lace. you will learn it better by watching it. >> it's like you've solved the mystery of the ages because it's true, you wish we could talk real baby talk but you

can't. in the headline here, can we understand and soothe our fussy babies and cranky toddlers. >> that's the beauty. it tells that the babies are born with the off reflex of crying. and the way you can calm them is by imitating their experience in the womb. a baby horse can run the first day of life. our babies are impature and they're missing something inside. and people think you're supposed to put the baby down and tip toe. but that's like locking in a dark closet. they need to be squadled and held them and rock them in the right way and when you use white noise all night long, they can sleep an extra hour and for many babies you can calm the crying down from hours

to seconds. >> and is that trying to replicate the atmosphere in the womb. >> it is. and you have to do it exactly right. if i hit your knee, and i got a knee reflex, but if i hit it and i got nothing -- it's like all or nothing. with babies if you don't squadle them right or move like that, if the baby is screaming, it will never work. it has to be more energetic and the subbing has to be harsher than you think you should do it. in the just shush. because the baby won't responsibility. >> that's in the book. >> we have 2,000 people teaching this across the country in hospitals, clinics, military bases, to help the families. military we do a lot of work with, because the families are stressed, they are away from their loved ones and so dealing with a crazy baby on top of that makes it hard. >> we asked our viewers to send in questions and i want to get to some of these befoyou know w

can you meet the doctor today. the first one is from frank. he said sometimes my 7-month- old doesn't sleep through the night and he wants to be held and fed. i think it's a comfort thing. he has a firm organic pat res but i think he's more comfortable in my bed. how can i get him to sleep in his crib. and he's 7 months old. >> and it's common for 7-month- olds to wake up at night. they're seating and they have -- they're sleeping and they hear noises and wake up and want you to play with them. so one simple tip is get a white noise cd that you play the rain on the roof sound or the womb sound all night long. and that gets the baby into a deeper level of sleep so they don't tend to wake up as much.

oftentimes that by itself will solve the problem. >> and this is from inga. my 12-month-old has ten teeth and hates having them brushed. how can i help trying to curb the screaming and pulling away. he makes is seem to dramatic. >> they sound dramatic at that age. there is talk about how toddlers are more like little cavemen. they're not boring. they know how to say please and thank you. when they are upset, they feel hurt. so when a child is fighting you, rather than trying to persuade them, say no, no, no bush, no brush. in that kind of a primitive way it makes them feel like you get it and they respect them. and i know it sounds weird, but every parent talks to their child like that when your child

is happy. when your child is happy, you don't say a very good mother is proud. you -- >> you say love that baby. >> and you say you did it. good job, good job. and so when you use that same technique, half of the upset stops in seconds. >> and singe said my son is tow walking and can't seem to walk flat footed. what can i do. >> it's normal for a one or two years old to walk on their tippy toes. two years old are prancing around because their exciting. by 4 it's beyond where it should by normal. so i would recommend having them checked out. >> and i've seen that t adults, walking on their toes. >> it can be. >> and a have a 3 and a half- year-old. there is no problem with his

hearing. he repeats the question we just asked, he answers more than he used to six months ago but i'm wondering if it is a thought processing issue or is it fairly normal in language development. this child sometimes doesn't answer. >> and we're so busy. we're saying sweet heart put that down and he didn't pay attention. so one thing is if you really want to communicate. get down on this level, make eye contact and make sure your child is hering you. i would ask how he does at preschool. because if he's going well with the other kids and he's socializing and interacting with them, then there is nothing to worry about. if there is a problem there, he might deserve further evaluation. and you can meet and greet dr. carp, you're helping to open a new business here at westfield montgomery mall today. and at sock folks can come on

and the whole let's move campaign that we hear so much about in washington. but how is this done across the country, dina? >> reporter: well, steve, we have a real disconnect when it comes to fighting childhood obesity and we're hoping this white house message will trickle down to playgrounds and schools across the country. the question is will that actually happen? mrs. obama is i is aing kids -- is saying kids need to move but adults do too. and part of the problem with the obesity is there is a disconnect -- a hip rock asy in terms of what we are saying and doing. yesterday was my son's birthday and couldn't send in cupcakes because of the school wellness policy. but we have specialty shops

popping up all over the country as we eat giant cupcakes filled with calories. and we have adults fighting an obesity epidemic and not doing right when it comes to exercise and eating right. how do we get this to sink into adults and to kids. and we're eating 31% more calories tan we did 40 years ago. so we have a lot to do on many levels. >> and i think in addition to that comes with sleep as well because we need the sleep but it's hard to find a guideline as to how much sleep you need, especially when it comes to kids? >> well, we're all getting into this back to school routine and as tough. the month of september is tricky on all of us. but when it comes to us -- but really the eight hours is a

good guideline. if you can aim for that, you're in good shape. but one of the things a sleep expert has recently told me is first you have to eliminate the electronics two hours before bed. and that means no video games in their rooms, no nexting on the cell phone, no television two hours before bed so they can get into this peaceful state. cut out caffeine after noon, make the bedroom a sleep-only sanctuary and for kids that means it's only asleep and for adults a little bit of smooching and be consistent. good to bed at the same time seven nights a week. steve. >> dina, thank you for joining us. people continue to talk about the female sports reporter, for what she was
